Best Thing I Ate This Week

Week of July 11 – Whole Berry Bar

Berry Blast

Whole berry blast, pro bar. Part of my power bar tasting for Dandyhorse magazine, a Toronto-based urban cycling magazine that i am guest editing.

Week of December 6 – Crabfest

My multi-talented friend David Newsom spent the last six weeks in Alaska as a shooter on the World’s Deadliest Catch. When he came back to town, he carted along 17 pounds of flash frozen Alaskan King Crab legs. This week, I helped prepare a crabfest for a dozen of his friends (a list that fortunately includes me). The crab was insanely succulent and needed little in the way of accompaniment. That said, some Meyers lemon aioli, crispy bread, home-made coleslaw and icy beer upped the ante, making it one of my favorite meals of the whole year.

Week of November 29 – Seasonal Pumpkin Pizza

This seasonal pumpkin pizza from Pitfire Pizza (4 locations in Los Angeles), was hands down one of the best pizzas i’ve ever eaten. perfect crust, genius toppings—and only $8.95. run, don’t walk.

Week of July 19 – Greek Salad

This Greek salad is one of my favorite lunches. I make it as soon as the
orange cherry tomatoes start to appear at the Hollywood Farmers Market. The
salad is all killer, no filler. Just tomatoes, kalamata olives, red onion,
cucumber and feta cheese—all dressed with my best olive oil and red wine
vinegar.

Week of July 12 – Portuguese egg custard tarts

These Portuguese egg custard tarts are from the Portuguese Bakery on Dundas
Street in Toronto. They cost a buck each and taste like a million dollars.
They are my next favorite thing from Portugal after wine from the Douro
region.
